Strange Thanksgiving

Well today I’m getting through an awful food poisoning episode, a result of a delicious thanksgiving dinner that I had last night and the best hotel in the city. I just realized that when you are in India the first time you get sick is because of the water/dirty food.. now I’m getting sick because I’m not used to eating meat *I haven’t eaten since 3 months or so and it was something they offered in the buffet* but it was not only meat, it was a delicious tenderloin with gravy and scallions…sigh.

India’s terror attack really affected the security of tourists here, the hotel was checking for bombs in all the cars…the few foreigners that live here can’t help but feel targeted and a little scared, last night we all congregated in the hotel to eat and a very somber mood prevailed throughout the night, we had a lot of thanks to give, one, the terrorist where aiming to target thanksgiving event, they just got the date wrong, last year we celebrated it on the 26 I bet they didn’t know that this year it was on the 27. Two, I was thinking of the hostages that are still being held in Mumbai, this country is so wonderful and nobody deserves an experience like that.

I went to the gym yesterday morning and everyone was watching the news… a very eerie dejavu of 9/11 when I was in the States. There’s tension in the air, Indian’s are hurt by this tragic episode, they really enjoy and take pride of hosting tourist and expats and this is a huge blow for all of us. I didn’t watch the news, instead I kept working out my legs as hard as I could. You can’t live your life scared, when is your time its your time, and I plan to live my life to the fullest.

Mehandi Couture

Meet Jasreet her name is Vizag's synonym for Mehandi. As my friend Padmaya (and current hero) and I arrived to Jasreet's apartment we encountered a line of 2 people, I guess not bad for Sunday at 8pm before Divali.

Jasreet sits patiently while she listens to the television and conversations among her clientele, there are delicious sweets and salty snacks on the table, magazines, newspapers and other entertainment for the people in line. Her mehandi mix smells like citron on herbs mixed together her hand is steady, it never shakes.

A self-taught woman who has been decorating women's hands for 20 years Jasreet tells me about her many experiences with different clients from the time she spent 10 hours on bridal mehandi to how she designs her own unique patterns.

Mehandi on the streets is one thing, most use set patterns that you can pick from and do not care for the quality of the final image, Jasreet has her secrets or secret ingredients for complement filled mehandi. An experience with Jasreet is to mehandi what couture is to the fashion world.
